In Social Studies this year, you will study U.S. History. You will learn about the beginnings of America and study through Reconstruction. The topics include:
* Settlement and colonization
* The Road to Revolution - The Declaration of Independence
* The American Revolution - The Constitution
* Washington's Presidency and the Jefferson Era
* The Industrial Revolution
* The Age of Jackson
* Manifest Destiny - Westward Expansion
* Abolition and Women's Rights
* The Civil War
You will need map pencils (colored pencils) for the purpose of map work and projects in this class. You will also need two composition books (one for each semester) to be used for reflections, journals, and notes.
In Language Arts, you will read a variety of genres including fiction, historical fiction, non-fiction, adventure, memoir, etc. You will be writing and research topics that are academically challenging and exploratory in nature. You will need a notebook for your Reading/Writing Log. This notebook will be kept in the classroom.
Every two weeks, we will go to the library to check out books for Silent Sustained Reading (SSR). SSR will be conducted in the first ten minutes of math class. You will be expected to keep Dialectical Journal notes in your notebook and they will be checked regularly.
