The Spring Woods Orchestra
With Honor and Spirit…
The Spring Woods Orchestra program has a long-standing heritage of excellence in making music. We now have four string orchestras which all perform regularly. The Spring Woods Orchestra has performed successfully at many festivals in Texas and Florida.
The Spring Woods Orchestra is comprised of approximately one hundred students in grades nine through twelve at Spring Woods High School in the Spring Branch Independent School District. Most of these students began their string education in sixth grade in our middle school Orchestra programs.
Performance opportunities are abundant at the high school level. Annual events include a season of four major concerts, a holiday concert at the Tiger Trail School, Region and State auditions, Pre-UIL Concert, UIL Concert and Sight-reading Contest, SBISD & UIL Solo and Ensemble Contests, the school musical and a Spring Trip. In addition, the orchestra is active in the community, sending out various chamber groups to perform for community events.
For many years the Spring Woods Orchestras have been successful at UIL contests. Both the Varsity Chamber Orchestra and the Non-Varsity Symphony Orchestra won Sweepstakes at contest this year.
The orchestra has performed successfully at many festivals over the years often earning Superior ratings. Most recently earning all Superior ratings and a Best in Class trophy at the Lone Star Showcase of Music Festival in Dallas.
Orchestra membership is divided by audition into four distinct string orchestras. Classes meet daily during their assigned period as well as after school section rehearsals for Chamber and Symphony. All orchestras meet after school for dress rehearsals prior to concerts.
The Spring Woods Orchestra represents a broad cross section of the student body. Its members participate in sports, service organizations, academic clubs and other fine arts. Many of our string players have been named to the top 10% or their graduating class and some have been salutatorian and even valedictorian. Despite a tremendously busy schedule of academic and extra-curricular events, orchestra members remain a close-knit group who find time to socialize with each other. Typical events include Lock-ins, Homecoming Parade, Tiger-Fest booth, parties, various fund-raisers, Spring Trip, and a banquet at the end of the year.
Our feeder schools include Spring Oaks Middle School taught by David Coldiron, Spring Woods Middle School, and Spring Branch Middle School taught by Melissa Condi.
