February 1 - 29: Read Nation

Housman will be participating in Read Nation again this year. This program is sponsored by the Houston Rockets. Students will log the number of minutes they read on a calendar for the month of February. On March 1, they will turn in the calendars to be tabulated. The results will be sent to the Houston Rockets organization. Schools all over the Houston area are competing to see who reads the most minutes. The winning school receives several prizes from the Rockets organization.

January 27, 2016: Bluebonnet Voting

Each year, a group of librarians choose a list of 20 books to nominate for the Texas Bluebonnet Award. Students all over Texas in grades three - six read at least 5 of the nominees and then vote on their favorite. This year we had 13 students vote at Housman. The Housman favorite was The Vanishing Coin by Kate Egon. Now we are waiting to see if the Housman favorite wins the award.

January 19, 2016: AR Trip to Dairy Queen

Four students were taken to Dairy Queen for an AR reading trip today. We almost had to reschedule or relocate. When we got there, there was a sign on the door saying they didn't have any ice cream. As we debated on what to do, the manager came out and said they had some ice cream at the moment, but we needed to hurry before it melted. Their ice cream machine was on the blitz. Much to the pleasure of the students, we got our ice cream. Thank you, Ms. Hanne, for coming with us!

January 15, 2016: 20/20 Day

We celebrated National Eye Care Month with 20/20 Day today. Students who wore their glasses to school were allowed to eat their lunch in the library. They were given a brownie and ice cream for dessert. We had 107 students come to lunch!

December 22, 2015: New Books!

Thirty new titles have been added to our Capstone account. Check them out!

December 7 - 11, 2015: Hour of Code

This week in the library, students learned the basics of Computer Science. Kindergarten, first grade, and second grade students programmed BeeBots. Third, fourth, and fifth graders used to guide characters and solve puzzles.

November 16, 2015: Champions are Readers

Today we celebrated second and third graders who completed their reading challenge. The ladies of Pi Beta Phi challenged the students to set a reading goal for a month. Those who reached their goal were invited to a celebration. These students received a certificate, ribbon, and a free book. All they had to do was read! Thank you, Pi Beta Phi!

November 6, 2015: Author's Luncheon

Yum, yum, spaghetti! The budding authors of Housman Elementary were celebrated with lunch in the library. Students came to Literacy Night and requested a bare book. They then wrote their own original story and illustrated it. The books that were returned were entered in an author's contest. The judges had a hard time choosing the winners, all the books were wonderful. Winners enjoyed spaghetti, carrots, brownies, and ice cream. Thank you Ms. Cliett for organizing Literacy Night and the luncheon!
