National Junior Honor Society

Patricia Suess

Selection as a member of the National Junior Honor Society is the pinnacle of achievement in middle school. This honor is recognized throughout the nation as a commitment to continued excellence on the part of the new member. Selection to NJHS is a privilege, not a right. It is based on five areas in the student’s life: scholarship, leadership, service, citizenship, and character.

The National Junior Honor Society of Spring Forest Middle School meets once a month before school and during the advisory period.  NJHS members participate in many activities, including painting the Bobcat paws on the circular drive, adopting needy families for the holidays, and hosting teacher appreciation breakfasts and luncheons. Along with Student Council we host events such as the Veteran's Day assembly. We assist area elementary schools by volunteering for school carnivals and field days.

Members of NJHS are committed to holding themselves to high standards academically and to setting an example in the classrooms with good conduct.

Applications for 7th graders are available in April each year. Students must have a cumulative average of 90 or higher over 6th and 7th grades. They are allowed no more than 3 N's in conduct during their 6th and 7th grade years. ISS/OSS assignment and/or Friday detention could prevent and result in an adverse admissions decision. Students who have had ISS/OSS or Friday detention will be reviewed on a case by case basis.

The faculty council will make final decisions regarding eligibility and will notify the Building Principal of candidates to be invited to become members of the SFMS chapter of the National Junior Honor Society. Teacher input will be requested from all teachers the student has had.

Applications are available from Mrs. Suess, the front office, the grade level counselors and online. They will be made available to students during lunch periods when applications are being taken.

Please read the application for membership requirements.

Induction ceremonies take place for 7th graders in May.

Members will be expected to do 10 service hours per semester in 8th grade, maintain a cumulative average of 90 in each of the four grading periods, not have any N's or U's in conduct and participate in NJHS activities.
