About Me

Hello! Welcome to Spring Forest Middle School and another exciting academic school year 2016-17. This is my ninth year in Spring Branch, and my third year teaching at SFMS.

I was born and raised in West Texas nearby Texas Tech University, a rich tradition of the red and black.
GO TECH! After college, I worked in the fast paced world of telecommunications as an operations analyst for several years.  When my family moved to Houston, I changed my career path with the assistance from the College of Education at UH out of need for a more rewarding career in helping people.

I take great pleasure and honor in serving the SFMS community.  I look forward to working with you to make this year a very productive and successful year!

Welcome to Ms. Tavilson's 8th Science Classes!

Class Expectations and Policies

Minimize

 Class Expections:

         *Be polite, positive, and respectful.

*Be prepared with all required materials every day.

*Be ready to begin learning at the bell every day.

*Be a problem solver - academically and socially.

         *Be an ACTIVE THINKER.

         *Be a LEARNER.

 Grading Guidelines:

A student's nine week grade will be based on a weighted average of the following components.

         *Tests/Major Projects - 50%

         *Labs/Quizzes - 30%

         *Homework/Daily work - 20%

I encourage parents and students to sign up for FAMILY ACCESS which is the system to holds our gradebook, so you can view grades anytime you like for all your child's classes. The front office and/or counselors are good resources to help you get logged into Family Access.

 Homework Guidelines:

Homework is usually only given 2-3 times each week depending on the student's need to achieve mastery for the lesson topic. After I have collected homework during class, anything turned in after that point will be considered late.

I do accept late work for reduced credit, however, the following criteria are applied as with accordance with school policy.

*A 25 point reduction for one day late.

*A 50 point reduction for two days late.

*Work that is three or more days late will not be accepted.

*No incomplete work will be accepted.

 Retesting Guidelines:

Reteaching/Retesting is encouraged and available for all students who do not master the curriculum for all major grades (tests and projects) as outlined in the Student Handbook. Students wanting to retake a test/project must make corrections and attend tutorials before they may retest. Retesting dates will be announced the day when graded tests are returned. Retesting must be requested within 48 hours after original test is graded and returned to student.

  Tutorial Guidelines:

I am available for science tutorials on Tuesday and Thursdays from 3:35 - 4:15 as well as most mornings before school with appointment. Mrs. Stokes in D205 is available as well on Monday and Wednesday afternoons at the same times.

     Absence Guidelines:

When a student is absent, it is the student's responsibility to get any assignments form the teacher, complete the assignment, and return the assignment within the number of school days that the student was absent.

Communication

Minimize

Individual parent communication will still take place through my email april.tavilson@springbranchisd.com or through my school phone at 713-251-4683. Feel free to use either anytime if you have questions, concerns or information you need to share with me. Please be aware if I am in the middle of a class, I may need to return your call during my conference, so I can give you my full attention. I look forward to calling you and letting you know all the positive ways your child is successful during the science class.

REMIND - This is optional communication system, but highly encouraged. There will be friendly reminders of current homework, test, project due dates, material needed to bring into class, or crazy/exciting stuff happening in science. If you sign up, you will only receive messages for your specific class. There is also an option where students can send me a message to ask a specific questions outside of class maybe to do with homework or when studying for a test. My office hours to send a message is until 8PM nightly. Anything sent after 8PM will be responded to the next day.
Please call, send me a note, or email me if you need assistance in signing up for access. I can give you the class code for you to join. I already have several students and parents join and they really appreciate the reminders.
To sign up for your specific class period, please send a text message to this number 81010.
Message that you send is different per class period. For example if you are signing up for 1st period, the message is @mstavi.

1st period - @mstavi                                     2nd period - @mstavil

4th period - @mstavils                                  5th period - @mstavilso

6th period - @mstavilson                              7th period - @32b9d

Standard text message rates apply.  Text message: To unsubscribe from all classes, simply reply with the word “stop”. Email: Reply to your teacher's message with the word "unsubscribe" in the subject field to stop receiving notifications for that class.
