About Me

With a B.S. in Management from Virginia Tech (Go Hokies!), I worked in sales and management for IBM, Oracle and Halliburton.  Eventually it was time for what I enjoy most: teaching math!  This will be my 16th year at SBMS.  I am blessed to teach Algebra I, Geometry and 8A Math and have also enjoyed teaching Geometry to high school students for 9 summers.

Welcome to SBMS 2017-8!  

Whether you are taking Algebra, Geometry or 8A Math, assignments for each week will be listed here.  Check below for tutorial times and on the calendar for test days.  Look to the left for my email and under Resources for helpful links.  Have a great year!

Interested in improving your grade?  There is a lot you can do!
• Review the day’s lesson every night before starting homework. If the homework is from the textbook, then watch videos on the textbook website. A link to the textbook website is under "Resources" to the left.
• Do homework and bring it to class everyday.  Do math homework early; don't wait and try to do it when you're tired.
• Check your planner or my website to see that you are doing the right assignment. Ask a parent to check that you've completed it correctly.  If odd problems are assigned, then check your answers after doing the problems.  Rework any problems you missed until you understand how to get the right answers.
• Attend up to 3 tutorials every week.

• Correct every quiz and test.

• If you fail a test, then study, complete test corrections and attend tutorials.  Then retest on a Wednesday after school.

Getting ready for a test?  Prepare at least 2 nights.

  • Study your notes and review the lessons in the book.  Use flash cards if you need to memorize anything.
  • Study and correct all quiz and homework problems you missed.  Practice extra problems of the types that are most difficult for you.
  • Make a practice test with 20-25 challenging problems.  You can find these from challenge problems after each lesson, chapter quizzes and tests in each chapter, as well as the student handbook section at the back of the textbook.
  • Use a timer and take the test in strictly 40 minutes.
  • Use check steps or ask a parent to help you grade it.

Re-tests are at 3:30 on Wednesdays.  All students who fail a test should TAKE ADVANTAGE OF RE-TESTS.

Before re-testing, the student must attend a tutorial and the teacher or tutor signs that the test corrections have been reviewed.  Parents need to sign the original test next to the grade.

Re-tests must be completed within 2 weeks of receiving the original, graded test or by the end of the grading period, whichever is sooner.  Re-tests are offered at 3:30 on Wednesdays in a math teacher's room.  Maximum re-test grade is a 70.

TEST ANXIETY TIPS

A moderate level of stress before and during an exam is useful, as it helps a student perform at their peak. Too much stress, or test anxiety, can keep a student from being able to focus on the task at hand. If your student is feeling overwhelmed by upcoming final exams, encourage them to keep in mind these tips for overcoming test anxiety:

Tips for students-
Before the exam:
• Manage your time well: get plenty of sleep, find time to exercise or be active, and schedule time to study.
• Focus on healthy behaviors: eat regular meals, drink water and other non-alcoholic beverages, choose healthy snacks (excessive sugar can make you drowsy), limit caffeine – it increases anxiety.
• Study in places that have minimal distractions.
• Take notes of your notes and chapters, use flash cards, or try to condense your notes each time you review for the next review.

During an exam:
• When you are taking a test, keep positive thoughts in your mind (yes, you can!) • Read all directions thoroughly • Read all questions carefully • Take a deep breath, stay focused, and STOP negative thoughts.
