Dear SBMS Parents & Guardians,

I’m writing to share some exciting news for our school community. As some of you know, our school was selected to be one of ten schools nationwide participating in the Collaborative, a program that is aimed to help us deepen our understanding of the needs and aspiration of our students, imagine and try new solutions, and ultimately consider what that might mean for the learning experiences we create here at Spring Branch (to learn more about the program, you can read the overview here).

In many ways, spring Branch Middle School represents our district at large: We have a rich history, incredible educators, and a lot of powerful learning for students. We also have real distance to go to truly serve every student and to ensure that our graduates are set up for a rapidly changing future. I see this opportunity as one that invites us to understand the nuances of that need and really think boldly about what is possible right here on our campus and more broadly in our district.

To kick start this journey, I’ve assembled a small team that represents different perspectives including teachers, administrators, parents, and central office supports. Our first charge as a group is to deeply listen--to spend time with different members of our community, in particular our students, to better understand their aspirations as well as their current reality. We’ll use the insights we zero in on where we begin imagining solutions. If you’d like a high level glimpse at what this process will unfold across the year, see here.

Throughout the course of this journey, there will be many opportunities to learn more and lend your voice. As a team, we will be sending regular updates about what we’re learning and inviting you all to get involved in different ways. However, if you ever have any questions or want to lend a hand, please don’t hesitate to reach out!

With deep optimism and excitement,

Bryan J. Williams, Ed.D.
