Second Grade at Pine Shadows Elementary

Second grade is a time for our students to set and meet their goals to become lifelong independent learners, thinkers, and problem solvers.  As a second grade team we are committed to working together with parents to ensure that their children are successful in everything that they do.  We also focus on instilling positive character traits which are reflected in our three school wide rules of:

              Be Positive

              Be Safe

              Be Excellent

Language Arts:

In the second grade Language Arts consists of: Reading, Writing,

Word Work, and effective communicating.  Most of these skills are taught using a Balanced Literacy approach.  In Reading students are taught comprehension strategies, they explore a variety of book genres, and work on many reading strategies that help them to read fluently so they can become lifelong readers.  In writing second graders learn to follow the routines of Writer’s Workshop while being taught strategies to help them to write for a variety of purposes. As students strengthen their writing skills it ensures that they are lifelong writers that can communicate effectively through their compositions.  All second graders are also expected to learn lots of vocabulary so they can listen, share, ask questions, and speak to communicate effectively.

Math:

Second grade mathematicians follow routines in Math workshop so they can learn new concepts and strategies and then practice them in small groups, work at stations, solve problems, and can communicate by speaking and writing what they have learned.  Second graders will cover 15 different units of study this year.  One important skill is that all second graders learn their math +/- facts so they have them memorized and can use them throughout the entire school year.

 Science and Social Studies:

Our Science and Social Studies concepts are taught in Units throughout the year.  We integrate the units into Language Arts and Math wherever possible.  The students are engaged in a variety of learning experiences such as projects, experiments, observations, teamwork, and reflecting thoughts, knowledge, and ideas in their journals.

My name is Karina Avila and I have taught second grade for six years at Pine Shadows and this will be my eighth year teaching in a bilingual classroom. This is my fourth year teaching in a Dual Language classroom. I received a Computer Engineering degree in 1991 from my home country of Venezuela. After working for ten years in the petroleum industry I decided to follow a true passion of teaching and completed my teaching credentials to teach elementary. In 2013, I received a Masters in Dual language from the University of Texas at Brownsville. I was named Pine Shadows Teacher of the Year by my colleagues in 2010-2011.
