TBA: 8th Grade Peer Group Meeting for parents re: High School Graduation Requirements and Endorsements

On January 29th, MHS and SHS counselors will be here to help you select your classes for ninth grade.

You will have multiple opportunities to make changes to your selections.

All ninth graders must take English 1, Math, Biology, and Social Studies. Additionally, if you haven’t completed Spanish II or German II, remember you need two LOTE credits (language other than English) to graduate. Also, when applying to college, a third or fourth year of foreign language will make you more competitive. You will need at least one high school credit of PE or Athletics. If you don’t plan to be on a sports team, you might consider taking PE as ninth grader. If you are not currently taking Photography or have not taken Art 1 pre-AP, you will still need one credit of Fine Arts as well.

What is a credit? A credit in high school refers to a full year in a class. ½ credit = a semester.

High School Graduation Requirements

Foundation (22 credits)                    Foundation with Endorsement (26 credits): Multidisciplinary (one example)

4 English                                                                 4 English

3 Math                                                                    4 Math

3 Science                                                                4 Science

3 Social Studies                                                       4 Social Studies

2 LOTE (Foreign Language)                                       2 LOTE

1 PE (Must be earned in high school.)                        1 PE

1 Fine Arts (Photo and Art 1 pre-AP at MMS count.)   1 Fine Arts

5 Electives                                                               6 Electives

The right column above is one pathway to achieve the multidisciplinary endorsement. While the state made changes to the high school graduation requirements, colleges still like to see that you have taken 4 years in each of the 4 core areas [Math, Science, English (LA), and Social Studies].

After you have had the chance to hear from the high schools about some of the electives, you may become interested in the additional endorsements.

The state requires every 8th grader to declare an endorsement before leaving middle school. Later this Spring, Ms. Perkins and Ms. Rushing will be helping you enter your endorsement in Skyward. There are 5 endorsements from which to choose:

  1. Multidisciplinary
  2. STEM
  3. Business/Industry
  4. Public Services
  5. Arts/Humanities

Students can choose more than one endorsement.

Each endorsement has more than one pathway.

Students can change their endorsement selection.
