Dual Language Program

The Dual Language Program at Cedar Brook Elementary is an enriched education program that uses two languages, Spanish and English, for the purpose of instruction. The classes are composed of elementary students: half are native Spanish-speakers and half are native English-speakers. The native language and culture of each student is valued and treated equitably. Instruction in both Spanish and English incorporates the required academic standards established by the state of Texas enabling students to become biliterate and proficient in both languages by the end of fifth grade.

 

Program Goals
The Dual Language students at Cedar Brook will:

  • Perform at or above grade-appropriate levels of achievement in all domains of academic skills and knowledge.
  • Develop high levels of proficiency in a second language while making normal progress in their first language.
  • Acquire an understanding and appreciation of cross-cultural differences.
  • Develop a positive self-esteem.

 

Program Model
Instructional time in the Dual Language class is divided between English and Spanish.

To prepare for participation in our 90/10 model, PreK students are instructed 50% in English and 50% in Spanish. The English time increases, and the Spanish time decreases every year until the students are instructed 50% in Spanish and 50% in English in fifth grade. The curriculum uses integrated thematic units and technology in all grades to connect language arts, math, science, and social studies. Students are provided with an interactive learning environment. Music, art, physical education, and library skills are part of the curriculum taught in English.
 

Role of the Staff

  • A certified Bilingual/ESL teacher instructs each class.
  • Teachers are reflective about curriculum and instruction.
  • Teachers treat all students equitably and have high academic expectations for all.
  • Teachers participate in monthly meetings to address student needs and program issues.

 

Parent Involvement and Commitment
Parental involvement is integral to the success of the program. Prior to a student enrolling in the Dual Language Program, the parent makes a commitment to:

  • Continue the child’s enrollment in the program for a minimum of seven years.
  • Participate in monthly parent meetings and other Dual Language functions.
  • Participate in second language classes.
  • Provide a minimum of ten hours of volunteer service to the school during the academic year.
  • Work with their children at
    home to continue to develop their language skills.

 

Program Growth
The Dual Language Program at Cedar Brook began with two kindergarten classes in 1997-98. Each year we added more classes per grade level up until the fifth grade. SBISD is now pleased to offer secondary Dual Language Programs in multiple sites.

The United States Department of Education, Office of English Language Acquisition, awarded Cedar Brook a three-year $450,000 Title VII Program Development and Implementation Grant beginning with the 2001-2002 school year. This campus-based project provided professional development training for classroom teachers and staff; implemented family literacy and outreach programs; purchased supplies and materials; and incorporated technology into the dual language classroom to enhance communication, learning, and instruction.

Students enter this program in either pre-kindergarten or kindergarten. Students may be admitted at other grade levels based on available space and individual assessment.
