Fifth Grade Curriculum
Math
Fifth graders explore the following concepts:
·         Number Concepts
·         Number Operations and Quantitative Reasoning
·         Patterns, Relationships and Quantitative Reasoning
·         Geometry and Spatial Reasoning
·         Measurement
·         Probability and Statistics
·         Problem Solving
·         Addition, Subtraction, Multiplication and Division
 
We use hands on activities, manipulatives and meaningful math games during instruction and independent practice.
 
Reading and Writing
Through various genres and different types of text, it is one of our primary goals in fifth grade to create life long readers. This is achieved through the following components: 
·         Real world reading through non-fiction
·         Reading: Book Club, Literary Elements,
·         Comprehension Strategies, Literature Circles
·         Vocabulary ~ Word Building, Spelling
·         Reading Response Journal and Free Writing Journal
 
Character Education
Community building strategies include community circle, and daily inspirational quotes. We are dedicated to providing opportunities for personal growth, problem solving and conflict resolution. In preparation for middle school we continually foster independence.
Science
Fifth grade science is a challenging and exciting time for students. Hands on experiments and activities are a cornerstone to our curriculum. The following subject areas are explored throughout the year.

Extra-curricular
Fifth graders have several opportunities to participate in leadership and talent building activities.
·         Student Council
·         Safety Patrol
·         Fifth grade track team
·         Festival Choir
 
D.A.R.E
During the first semester of the year, fifth graders participate in a valuable program – D.A.R.E., or Drug Abuse Resistance Education. In this powerful curriculum, students are taught by police officers to resist negative pressures and situations that they may encounter as they develop into young adults.
Social Studies
Throughout the year, fifth graders study and explore the exciting history and geography of our country. We also focus on citizenship, patriotism, and the importance of participating in the community.
