Spelling
Students become more proficient spellers in third grade, using their knowledge of spelling rules and patterns to help them spell unfamiliar words. In addition to a weekly list which is assessed on Fridays through a spelling test, the real goal is for the student’s spelling skills to transfer into their writing.

Writing
Third graders continue to develop and mature as writers and learn to write for a variety of reasons such as to give information, entertain, make requests, and persuade others to listen to their point of view. Students are taught the Writing Process in which they brainstorm ideas, create webs and organizers to capture their thinking before writing, create rough drafts, and revise and edit their writing to make a “polished” copy.
