Second Grade Curriculum
Math The math curriculum teaches skills and problem solving strategies to develop a solid understanding of numbers. Number of the day, manipulatives, math centers, math minute, and games are used to strengthen and reinforce students understanding of math concepts throughout the year. Students are encouraged to look for math in the real world.	Reading Second graders read daily in small and large groups. Emphasis is placed upon learning and internalizing reading strategies. The major focus is comprehension with fluency. Reading in class will be done from all the different genres. Our objective is to instill a life long love of reading.
Science Our hands-on science curriculum is organized around units such as weather, balance and motion, birds, and habitats.	Writing Students will develop writing skills through Writer’s Workshop. Second graders experiment with many different purposes for writing. Children work at their own pace writing, revising, editing, and publishing stories.
Social Studies The students are engaged in a variety of learning experiences such as projects and experiments. This year second graders will be learning concepts of citizenship, geography, community, interdependence, and economics.
