First Grade Curriculum
Math
First graders are introduced to strategies that allow them to solve and create problems. They learn to order numbers, build sets of ten and read and construct word problems. They also learn to identify place value, solve addition and subtraction problems, sequence numbers and events and time. Students explore non-standard measurement and determine reasons to support thinking and draw conclusions.
Reading
Reading and comprehension are achieved through word study, listening, questioning, developing fluency, interpreting, evaluating and connecting to real life experiences. In first grade we work independently and in small groups for guided reading. To develop our comprehension skills we learn to connect something new to what we know. We create mental images and determine what is important in the text.
Writing
Students will learn the basics of forming complete sentences using spacing, punctuation, and capitalization. They will compose lists of topics, and use these to write simple stories and journal entries.
Science
First graders are introduced to the scientific method and rules for safety during lessons and experiments. Learning the life cycles of plants and animals, exploring soil, and researching insects are some of the areas of study.
Character Education
Some of the community building strategies that we use are community circle and classroom rules. We incorporate TRIBES tenets such as attentive listening, mutual respect, appreciations/no putdowns, and right to pass.
Social Studies
Students in first grade begin their year learning the rules and laws of a citizen in a community. They learn to read, construct maps, and learn the cardinal directions. They also learn about the world they live in. Each class will study a chosen country. The students will develop an understanding of America and their chosen country. They also will study Texas and become experts on their state! First graders will also study economics and learn how money relates to every day life.
