Recent messages from SBISD Superintendent of Schools Duncan F. Klussmann, Ed.D. on the current state of funding for public education in the State of Texas:

Overview: Our Budget Situation

As a direct result of the anticipated significant drop in state funding for public education, the SBISD Board of Trustees on April 5, 2011, approved measures that will reduce expenses for the 2011-12 school year by more than $17 million, or roughly 7% of the district’s budget.

In addition to reductions in operating expenses at the campus and district level, these measures impact about 350 positions, or about 7% of district personnel.  Roughly 70% of the eliminated positions are in non-teaching roles. These cuts are necessary because of budget decisions being made in Austin.

District leaders and the Board of Trustees have worked for months in efforts to do everything possible to protect our classrooms and student programs. Principals were included in the process as well. Over the past six years, SBISD has been able to protect its students from the impact of budget challenges resulting from the state’s public school finance model.

Unfortunately, the size of the anticipated cuts this year will lead to changes that will soon affect all of our campuses and classrooms.
