Seven schools win TBEC Honor Roll award
The Austin-based Texas Business & Education Coalition (TBEC) has named six secondary-level Spring Branch ISD campuses and one elementary school to its annual Honor Roll awards list for sustained academic excellence.

Recognized this year by the well known nonprofit business and education organization are Memorial and Stratford high schools; Memorial and Spring Branch middle schools; Cornerstone Academy, a district charter middle school; and Westchester Academy for International Studies, a combined district charter middle and high school.

Several Spring Branch campuses have now earned this honor multiple times, either several years in a row or numerous times during recent years.

Memorial High, for example, has been a TBEC award winner for the past three years; Cornerstone Academy is a four-time winner, according to school officials. Memorial Middle and Frostwood Elementary are repeat TBEC honorees, too.

To earn TBEC Honor Roll recognition, schools must demonstrate three years of consistent, high performance in all subjects compared to other schools serving similar student populations.

“TBEC Honor Roll schools have the highest percentage of students performing at the state’s most rigorous standard – Commended – in every subject. You and your schools have truly earned a place on the Honor Roll through hard work and student achievement over an extended period of time,” TBEC’s Business Chair Tegwin Pulley and Vice-Chair Jesús Chávez told school honorees jointly in an awards letter.

“Each campus named a Texas Honor Roll school is a tribute and honor to our staff, students and community for their high standards of achievement,” Superintendent of Schools Duncan Klussmann said.

Less than 4 percent of 8,000 public schools in Texas won recognition this year. Campus principals and guests will be recognized Nov. 10 at the Grand Hyatt San Antonio during an awards reception and dinner. The San Antonio event is co-sponsored by HEB and IBM.

School principals and directors at these campuses are Steve Shorter, Chris Juntti, Lisa Weir, Bob Salek, Jill Wright, Natalie Blasingame and Jan Griffin. Pamela Butler, who was the founding director at Westchester Academy, served there through May 2008.
