 Dyslexia Specialist    Print

Spring Branch ISD is fortunate to have regular education itinerate dyslexia teachers to provide mulitisensory strategies and instruction to help build skillful readers, writers, and spellers.  I am fortunate to be one of those teachers here at Frostwood, helping students in all grade levels build their confidence through positive interactions and instruction so that they can perform to the best of their abilities.

We have been trained by speech pathologists, Neuhaus trainers, experts around the country that demonstrate at the International and Houston Dyslexia conferences, as well as trainers from Regions IV and X.  Our own district also has many experts that provide us continual training throughout the year such as our supervisor, Dr. Patricia Oliver.    Our resources provide for a variety of needs because every dyslexic student is different, learns in a different way, and requires different strategies to build their skills.

One of the interventions in place at Frostwood is a dedicated reading intervention position supported by campus PTA funds. Utilizing last year’s end-of-year data and current district assessments, students identified as needing support receive additional guided reading groups each week to accelerate their growth as a reader. In the primary grade levels, these guided reading groups support the acquisition of early reading strategies, develop phonetic knowledge, and engage in talk about the text including problem/solution, character’s feelings, and sequence of events. In the intermediate grade levels, the guided reading groups expose students to diverse topics and genres, support the comprehension of more sophisticated and complex texts, utilize graphic organizers to think about the text, and develop vocabulary and conceptual understandings. The Instructional Leadership Team (administrators, school improvement specialists, and reading intervention specialist) meets regularly with grade level teachers to monitor the progress of these students and consider their instructional needs.

Kelly Edwards has worked in Spring Branch ISD as a classroom teacher, Reading Recovery teacher, Dyslexia Support teacher, and most recently as a Literacy Coach/School Improvement Specialist for Language Arts and Social Studies.
