 Jamestown Settlement

This unit of study is called colonial life.  We will explore how and why the early colonies of Jamestown and Plymouth led to the English colonization of the East Coast of North America.

11/9/09 Given an online CSI activity and a video clip, students will create a hypothesis using three pieces of evidence to explain what they believe happened to the lost colony of Roanoke by writing a police report and sharing their findings with the class.

Given a series of questions about the first Virginians, students will answer by reading from A History of Us, Chapter 3, pages 21-24 and compose a diary entry from the point of view of a Native American child.

11/10/09 Students will participate in an online adventure about Jamestown. (on portal) Students will become the Captain of the Jamestown Colony: Can you do any better than the real colonists? You will have a copy of the London Company's Instructions to help guide you. Also, you can ask your fellow colonists and the Native Americans for advice. Be careful, though, because some advice is better than others!
Given an ActivBoard presentation on the establishment of the English colonies, student will be able to explain how and why Roanoke, Jamestown and Plymouth were founded by taking notes and answering questions using Active Votes.

Students will also complete three activities to prepare for the colonial simulation that begins tomorrow.

11/11/09 Students will set up their own colony in the New World by beginning a virtual computer simulation called Settling America to discover the geography, economics, culture, vocabulary, and diplomacy involved in setting up a new colony in America. Students will demonstrate their learning by completing quizzes and writing a journal log of what happens in their colony.

Given a series of questions, students will predict the correct answers and then confirm their answers by reading A History of US pages 25-28 about the founding of Jamestown and how John Smith helped the colony to survive. Students will also compose an acrostic poem using JOHNSMITH.

11/12/09 Writing Benchmarks…view A New World in the afternoon.

11/13/09 Students will continue their computer simulations of their colonies and
given a series of questions, students will predict the correct answers and then confirm their answers by reading A History of US pages 32-39.

11/16/09 Students will continue their computer simulations of their colonies and complete a reading response using the CPS system and A History of Us pages 40-49.

11/17/09 Given an ActivBoard Presentation on how England became a major world power, students will fill in some notes, discuss with a partner, and take a quiz using active votes.

11/18/09 Students will visit the Colonial History Detective Website and become a history detective. Go back in time and investigate the daily lives of the Daggetts, a colonial family from northeastern Connecticut. Collect clues to uncover answers to 7 questions about colonial life in the 1700s. Then prove your skills as a history detective by discovering "What's wrong with this picture?"

Students will participate in an interactive flipchart about colonial regions to learn how each region was distinct due to geographic features by taking notes and answering some questions using active votes. Students will also label a map of the 13 colonies and color code by region.

11/20/09 Given an interactive website about the First Thanksgiving, students will use historical evidence (primary sources) to make educated guesses about what life was like for the people of Plymouth and the natives who lived there by writing a diary entry as a colonist or Native American to describe the first Thanksgiving.(half of the class will do the activity for 11/23/09)

11/23/09 Given notes and pages in Adventure Tales (51-58), students will discover who, how and why the 13 English colonies were established by answering multiple choice questions and creating a chart in groups on the 13 colonies. Chart will include name of each colony, when it was founded, who founded it, why it was founded and other important facts. (half of the class will do the activity for 11/20/09)
