The Houston Bar Association teamed up with area medical professionals to teach fifth-graders at six Spring Branch ISD elementary schools about the medical and legal consequences of drug and alcohol use. The classroom visits were held Oct. 22 as part of Red Ribbon Week, the Houston Bar Association reports.
Medical professionals told students how drugs, alcohol and tobacco damage their minds and growing bodies, while attorneys discussed the perils that await young people who enter the criminal justice system.
In Spring Branch, participating campuses this year were Hollibrook, Housman, Ridgecrest, Shadow Oaks, Spring Shadows and Terrace elementary schools, the Houston Bar Association said.
This interactive program, called the IDEA Program, was presented to 1,500 fifth-graders across the Houston region. It has been presented to more than 40,000 students in school districts in the region since it began.
