Red Ribbon Week projects reach many students
An incredible variety of special events and activities will be held this week in Spring Branch ISD schools to mark Red Ribbon Week and support grassroots efforts to help all children live healthy, drug-free lives. The Red Ribbon Campaign in Texas honors Drug Enforcement Administration special agent Enrique “Kiki” Camarena, who was killed in 1985 by drug traffickers. Congress created the first national Red Ribbon Campaign 22 years ago by proclamation.

Eye-catching activities will be held at several SBISD secondary schools. They include a two-day event at Westchester Academy for International Studies where selected students will dress in black and wear warning placards. One student, for example, will wear a sign saying “I was killed by a drunk driver.” Other secondary campuses announcing events include Landrum, Spring Oaks, Spring Woods and Spring Branch middle schools, as well as Stratford High School.

SBISD prekindergarten and elementary schools announcing special events include Wildcat Way School for Early Learning, and Spring Branch, Buffalo Creek, Memorial Drive, Rummel Creek, Housman, Hollibrook, Ridgecrest, Westwood, Bunker Hill, Thornwood, Meadow Wood, Nottingham and Woodview elementary schools.

In addition to traditional campaign activities, such as displaying red ribbons on campus, the Houston Rockets mascot, Clutch, gave a Drug Free presentation at Nottingham Elementary on Oct. 22. At Meadow Wood Elementary, the Urban Arts Dance Team known as Urgeworks will perform Oct. 24. Several campuses will adjust their celebration of Red Ribbon Week due to student testing plans.
