Mike began his Spring Branch career in 1961 as a history teacher and football, basketball and track coach at Spring Woods Junior High School. He served as athletics director from 1979 until 2001, when he retired after 40 years in education and athletics.
“This is an unbelievable honor and something that I never expected,” Mike said after a half-time ceremony that included the presentation of a framed rendering of the field house to him.
“This evening is probably the top honor in my entire career. What I’m really happy to see is that this new facility is intended for student use,” he added.
Mike served as head baseball coach from 1963 to 1966 at Memorial High, and then he was campus athletic director and varsity football coach from 1969 through 1975.
He was appointed SBISD assistant athletic director in 1976, and three years later appointed district director of athletics, a post he held until retirement in 2001.
Mike has earned many career honors. These include the 1988 Athletic Director of the Year award from the Texas High School Athletic Directors Association, the 1997 State Award of Merit from the National Interscholastic Athletic Administrators Association, and the 1998 Distinguished Service Award from the Greater Houston Football Coaches Association.
In 1998, the Texas High School Athletic Directors Association inducted Mike into its Hall of Honor. He was a member for more than 40 years of the Texas High School Coaches Association. Mike also served as president of the Texas High School Athletic Directors Association in 1988. In 1993, he was named SBISD’s Boss of the Year.
Mike served as president of the Spring Branch Memorial Optimist Club 1983-1984. He is an active member of Fairhaven United Methodist Church.
Joining Mike at the Sept. 26 field house dedication were Superintendent of Schools Duncan F. Klussmann, a majority of the SBISD Board of Trustees and numerous Athletics Department friends and colleagues.
His wife, Kay, and about a dozen close family members also attended the early evening event.
“It’s overwhelming and unexpected” an emotional Kay Williamson said after the dedication standing near the field house. “The family is happy for him. He loves Spring Branch. To have his name on this building is icing on the cake.”
The Mike Williamson Field House is located at 1050 Dairy Ashford.
