Teachers Marcia Looper, Maurine Richter and Susan Bowen will be among the presenters at the upcoming Texas Council of the Social Studies, which will be held Oct. 18-20 in El Paso.
Marcia Looper, who teaches at Valley Oaks Elementary, and Maurine Richter a Cornerstone Academy teacher, will model the student project titled “Revolutionary War Dinner Party; Remember the Ladies!” As part of their learning project, students “invite” six Revolutionary War heroes and heroines to a classroom dinner. Students research the historical figures, plan a historicially accurate menu, and even write party dialogue for the hosts and guests.
In addition, Susan Bowen of Spring Branch Middle School will show Texas educators how to better help students understand the trends in Texas immigration. Her student-learning project, titled “Immigration to Texas – 1821 to the 20th Century,” includes student study of multicultural trends, immigration laws in the state, and research about immigrant ethnic groups.
