Five named National Hispanic and National Achievement scholars
Memorial High officials report that four seniors have just been named National Hispanic Scholars and one other student has been named a National Achievement Scholar. In addition, 24 Memorial High students were recently recognized by the College Board as National Merit Semifinalists.

Named as National Hispanic Scholars are Hunter Paniaga, Karim Wahab, Amanda Sagastegui and Patrick Samper. Amanda Sagastegui and Patrick Samper were also named National Merit Semifinalists. Named as a National Achievement Scholar is Robert Nash, who is also a National Merit Semifinalist.

The National Hispanic Recognition Program, begun by the College Board in 1983, identifies outstanding Hispanic high school students and shares information about these top students with colleges and universities. In order to be eligible, students must be at least one-quarter Hispanic. Each year, about 3,300 high school students nationwide who took the PSAT/NMSQT as juniors earn the Hispanic Scholar designation.

African-American students who meet requirements and request consideration can enter both the National Achievement Scholarship and National Merit programs at the same time. Each year, about 3,000 students nationwide are referred to colleges and universities and about 1,500 recognized as National Achievement Scholarship finalists. (9-26-07)
