A $42,500 grant award will help expand the district’s highly successful Collegiate Challenge program at Northbrook High to Stratford and Spring Woods high schools this year, district leaders report. The one-year grant was awarded to the two SBISD high schools by the Texas High School Project Exemplar Program. The project is a program of both the Gates and Dell foundations and the Communities Foundation of Texas.
Founded and sponsored by ChapelwoodUnitedMethodistChurch, the Collegiate Challenge program at Northbrook High matches college-focused mentors with high school juniors and seniors. Mentors and students work together on college and university applications, as well as scholarship letters and requests. Last year, MemorialDriveUnitedMethodistChurch added seven new mentors at Stratford High. Since its beginning in 2000, the Collegiate Challenge program has helped almost all its students win college acceptances and scholarships. (7-25-07)
