A Northbrook High student who spoke no English only five years ago has won an essay contest on the topic of energy conservation sponsored by the Institute for Real Estate Management (IREM). Senior Felipe Murillo was honored during a summertime luncheon attended by Mayor Bill White and other city officials.
Felipe, who was born in Houston, was raised in Santa Rita, Mexico, where he remained until 12 years old. Today, he is fluent in Spanish and English. A member of the National Honor Society, he is active in cross country, soccer, and participates in several cancer awareness programs at Northbrook High. Now enrolled in his second year in health occupations, he will work this year in a local hospital. He hopes to attend college and pursue a career in medicine. (9-13-07)
