Memorial High School junior Cory Whitsett took home the title of golf champion after winning the 91st Western Junior Championship at Sea Island Golf Club’s Seaside Course. The tournament, which is the oldest junior golf tournament in the United States, was played this year at St. Simon’s Island, Georgia.
As the winner of the five day tournament held June 16-20, Whitsett received the Western Junior crystal trophy. He also received the honor of having his name engraved on the permanent Milton Woodard Trophy, alongside several world famous golfers, including Jim Furyk and Tiger Woods.
Indeed, Whitsett was proud of his performance in the tournament, which he won with a final score of 268, 12 strokes under par.
“There is no way to describe the feeling I have in knowing my name will forever be on the same trophy with Hunter Mahan, Johnny Miller, David Duval and Tiger Woods, who was a three time winner. This gives me something to aim for,” Whitsett said on his website, http://corywhitsett.com/.
Whitsett is currently rated second in the Polo Golf rankings. As a Memorial High golfer, he took home the 5A boys championship title earlier this year, and was recently selected by the Houston Chronicle for the boys golf All-Greater Houston first team.
