Housman Elementary nurse saluted
Housman Elementary School Nurse Diane Roberts was honored as one of the region’s best nursing professionals by the Houston Chronicle in its annual Salute to Nurses newspaper insert. The recognition occurred during National Nurses Week, held May 6-12. The school nurse was nominated by Principal Jerona Williams.

A registered nurse for more than two decades, Roberts joined the Housman Elementary staff three years ago after working in Indonesia with the Agency for International Development. She was also a nurse in the cardiovascular unit at St. Luke’s Episcopal Hospital and served as an administrator at Texas Children’s Hospital. A graduate of Vanderbilt University, she has earned a master’s degree in public health from The University of Texas Health Science Center in Houston.

In her nomination, Principal Williams noted that Roberts had created a special program for students needing glasses or hearing aids, known as the 20/20 Day/dB Celebration, as well as the Housman Health Club for third- through fifth-grade students. Among other things, the club screens many students for juvenile diabetes.

""To name only one patient or student that Diane Roberts has touched would be difficult since she provides daily care for 573 students and 70 faculty and staff, as needed. We have students who have... a range of pediatric issues," the principal said.
