On May 19, the SBISD Board of Trustees honored 34 student athletes for advancing to state-level competition in their respective UIL sports. The students qualified for the annual recognition by performing well in district level meets and tournaments and then ranking highly again in regional meets and tournaments.
Recognized students included the following athletes in tennis, golf, swimming and diving:
Memorial High’s Jonathan Chang, state qualifier in Boys’ Tennis Singles, and Stratford High’s Carlene Leyden and Monica Pieratt, state qualifiers in Girls’ Tennis Doubles. Memorial High coaches are Bud Booth and Shana Ciarella; Stratford High coaches are Roy Frazee and Tom Courson.
State qualifiers in Boys’ Golf are Memorial High’s Lawrence Chang, Greg Rochna, Tyler Gann, Jes Schneider and Cory Whitsett, who was state champion. Coaches are Cameron Sands and Renee Rosales.
Memorial High state qualifiers in swimming and diving individual events and relays are Chris Valach, Harrison Robinson, Alex Pujol, John Wagner, Chelsea McCorvey, Catherine Wagner, Emily Shoemaker, Kristin Rollins, Cheryl Wan, Carliegh Kutac and Zoe Bond. Memorial coaches are Jason Mauss, Amy Daze and Ed Hooker.
Stratford High state qualifiers in individual events and relays in swimming and diving are Sarah Ayers, Hunter Bayley, Michael Bishop, Marlon Bishop, Rob Chucla, Jenny Dye, Jordon Johnson, Nick Latiolais, Katherine Maclean, Lilly Marrow, Lauren McCleary, Ryan McCleary, Sara Mokhtari, Kara Parker, Andrew Weikel, Alejandro Weitzman. Stratford High swimming and diving coaches are Mike Hoskovec, Eva Aurich and Ed Hooker.
