A Stratford High School science teacher and a Memorial High School English teacher will travel to Florida and England this summer as 2008 Fund for Teachers Fellows. The Houston-based Fund for Teachers is a nonprofit organization that provides educational grants to teachers for summer sabbaticals focused on professional development, exploration and renewal.
Named as Fund for Teachers Fellows this year are Stratford High’s Quentin Barrett, who will travel to Anna Maria Island in Florida to work in the field with the Mote Marine Laboratory on marine biology projects, and Memorial High’s Patti Nommensen, who will follow in the footsteps of the Romantic poets as she tours England’s scenic Lake District region.
Since the Fund for Teachers was created, more than 2,500 teachers from 47 states have studied and traveled throughout the United States and to more than 100 countries on several continents. Fellows like Barrett and Nommensen earn study grants of up to $5,000 for summertime travel and expenses. For details on the fund’s grants and application process, visit www.fundforteachers.org.
