Western-themed paintings by two Memorial High art students are among 54 student works selected for the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo’s upcoming art auction. Through the auction, student works such as these will raise thousands of dollars to help students across the state receive scholarships and attend Texas colleges and universities.
Ranked among this year’s top 25 Rodeo works are paintings by Memorial High sophomore Jessica Ladermann, an Art 1 student of instructor Marilyn Guerinot, and junior Da Sol (Danna) Lim, an Advanced Placement student of Cathleen May. Lim’s oil on canvas of a Texas steer is titled “Thinking Texas Lying on Texas Peace.” Ladermann’s work, also oil on canvas, is titled “Unexpected Oasis.” It depicts sunlight falling on prickly cactus. The Rodeo’s School Art Program, which began in 1964, receives more than 300,000 entries each year. Students must submit an original project based on Western culture, history or heritage. This year, only the top 54 Grand Prix Judging rated student works will be auctioned. The 2007 School Art Auction brought in more than $1.5 million in sales.
