Sheila Simmons, director of human and civil rights for the National Education Association, will speak on the topic “Dropout Prevention – How We Can All Be Part of the Solution,” during a professional development meeting from 3:30-6 p.m. in the Spring Branch Educational Center Library, 9016 Westview.
During the seminar, Dr. Simmons will share her expertise on the high school dropout rate and initiatives to close the achievement gap. A discussion on how educators, parents and community members can be part of the solution will also be conducted.
Dr. Simmons has directed the NEA Center for the Advancement of Public Education, a public policy department, and has served as a spokesperson for the NEA on issues ranging from vouchers and charter schools to privatization of public schools. Her current work focuses on closing achievement gaps at the local and state levels. She serves on a core group directing this work at the national level.
This special event will include light refreshments and door prizes. Spring Education Association elections will also be held and information will be shared on timely topics, including the Social Security GPO (Government Pension Offset) and WEP (Windfall Elimination Provision).
