Nine students earn top awards at Rodeo Art Exhibit
Nine SBISD students have been named top Rodeo Art Exhibit winners after judging was held at the Altharetta Yeargin Art Museum, located on the campus of Westchester Academy for International Studies, 901 Yorkchester.

More than 550 students displayed works during the popular exhibit, which drew more than 700 parents, students and other guests to the privately funded museum for two viewing days, Jan. 17-18. Judging was conducted Jan 16 by a panel chosen by the 2008 Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo.

The district’s student exhibit has received an Outstanding Show award for two years now from the Livestock Show and Rodeo. The student works selected for exhibition at the upcoming Rodeo are eligible for auction. These students may also apply for related scholarships, too. The Rodeo will be held March 3-22 at Reliant Park.

This year’s Best of Show winners include Buffalo Creek Elementary first-grader Sofia Hernandez for her painting, Red Rodeo Cowgirl; Memorial Middle eighth-grader Jennifer (Bohan) Fan for the painting, The Field of Dreams; and Memorial High junior Da Sol (Danna) Lim for her painting, Thinking Texas Lying on Texas. Teachers of these students are, respectively, Natalie Wagggenspack, Lynn Ludlam and Cathleen May.

Four students were named Gold Medal winners. They are Frostwood Elementary third-grader Ashley Park, for Texas Flowers; Landrum Middle eighth-grader Adrianna Guillen, for the painting Falling From ‘Africa; and Memorial High junior Elizabeth Herlin and senior Julia Mason, for the respective painting and sculpture titled Patience and Jack. For these students, art instructors are Jane Salinas, Andres Bautista and Cathleen May.

Two separate Special Merit awards were issued to students of Memorial High teacher Marilyn Guerinot. Sophomore Jessica Laderman won for her painting, Unexpected Oasis, and senior Sam Owens won special merit for a color drawing titled Old Timer.
