School Supply Project soars with flamingo “flock” support
Two high school students who bought 48 plastic pink flamingos have created a traveling neighborhood tropical flock that has raised more than $1,500 so far for the Spring Branch ISD Council of PTAs’ annual School Supply Project.

More funds are needed to help thousands of Spring Branch elementary and secondary students begin the new school year with appropriate supplies. The new school year begins Aug. 27.

The students’ pink flamingos have appeared in several neighborhood yards after residents were emailed and given two good-natured options: Make a project donation and send a 12-member flock to someone else’s front yard or buy so-called Flamingo Insurance and protect their yards from the flamboyantly colored birds.

“We really appreciate all the support we’ve had from our neighbors,” says SBISD Council of PTAs’ President Diane Swan. In early August, project organizers Patty Busmire and Karen Peck will be joined by volunteers to organize, pack up and deliver school supply packets and kits to Spring Branch campuses, which identify students in need.

Last year, the Council served more than 7,000 students in need. With help, it is possible to match that amount again this year. To make an online donation to the School Supply Project, please visit www.springbranchisd.com or send a check payable to SBISD Council of PTAs, 955 Campbell Road, Houston, TX77024, Attn: Treasurer. Please include “School Supplies” on the memo line. (7-24-07)
