Recent donations by two district groups reflect Spring Branch's spirit of giving. At their December meeting, SBISD counselors donated a variety of toys to the U.S. Marine Corps Reserve’s Toys for Tots program, which has distributed toys to more than 170 million needy children in the United States, Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands since its founding in 1947.
Toys donated by counselors were picked up during the monthly meeting by two local Marines, including Pfc. Anthony Medrano, a 2007 graduate of Spring Woods High School. Pfc. Medrano has completed basic training and will soon receive more instruction at Camp Lejeune in North Carolina. Spring Woods High counselor Patricia Benton helped organize the group’s Toys for Tots drive.
At Northbrook High School, meanwhile, students in the Childress Foundation Academy program adopted a family from Treasure Forest Elementary School. The high school students donated money, shopped from a family wish list, wrapped gifts and held a separate food drive for ther adopted family.
About 30 young “elves” gathered in Donald Miller’s high school classroom recently to wrap toys, clothes and bedding needs, including sheets and towels. Donald, who is Childress Foundation Academy coordinator, reports that several friends and family members added books, jackets, blankets and a Wal-Mart gift card to the group’s donation before planned delivery on Dec. 18.
