The works of 25 art students at Landrum Middle School were exhibited during November inside Terminal E at Bush Intercontinental Airport as part of a "Celebration of Diversity" themed event sponsored by Continental Airlines. The students are all current or former students of Pre-Advanced Placement art teacher Andres Bautista and art teacher Morna Simon-Raffel.
Three students received savings bonds for their efforts. On Nov. 13, the art students also toured the airport terminal, had a guided tour of a Boeing 757 jet, and were treated to lunch by the Houston-based airline.
The combined collection of 32 student works had themes ranging from musicians to cowboys. Five of the students are now in high school. Others are Pre-AP art students of Andres Bautista. His students include Salvador Sandoval, Estrella Garcia, Arturo Romero, Maria Raqmirez, Harold Bonilla, Adrianna Guillen, Luis Orozco, Itzel Diaz, Jose Hernandez and Sarah Johnson.
Ninth-graders enrolled now at Northbrook High School are Gustavo Pino, Jessica Hernandez and Armando Morales; Inri Diaz and Eduardo Miranda now attend Memorial High School.
Students of art teacher Morna Simon-Raffel are Miguel Aviles, Romeo Garcia, Katy Johnson, Angel Lopez, Jocelyn Loyola, Julie Nguyen, Arturo Ramirez, Morgan Ramirez, Luis Sandoval and Jenny Wehrling. Students receiving savings bonds were Jose Hernandez, for a family portrait, Luis Orozco, for a mandala design, and Gustavo Pina, who created paintings of an Aztec warrior and soccer game.
In addition, members of Landrum Middle's Bit by Bit Mosaic Program created large columns for the themed exhibit on ancestry and diversity with a focus on the recent Day of the Dead, or Dia de las Muerto, celebration.
