Eleven students named to Texas All-State Choir and Orchestra

Eleven high school students have been named to this year’s Texas All-State Choir and Orchestra. The All-State recognition is the highest individual honor awarded. Tens of thousands of high school students audition for All-State Honors yearly. Only about 1,300 Texas students win the prestigious ranking.

Road engineer brings bridges to Bendwood Campus students

Gifted and Talented third-graders who attend Bendwood Campus classes are learning how to design and build high-rise bridges like the ones rising just blocks away on Interstate 10. Texas Department of Transportation’s Jeff Volk, an assistant area engineer for West Harris and Waller County, and other DOT engineers held special presentations Jan. 29-Feb. 4 for students in Carolyn Morris and Denise Howard’s classes.

Student work chosen for Capitol Art Show

The work of four Spring Branch elementary and middle school students has been chosen by the Texas Art Education Association to be included in the 100-piece Capitol Art Show, which will be on display March 1-7 at the Texas State Capitol in Austin. A Youth Art Month awards ceremony for students and teachers will be held March 2, also at the Capitol.

Northbrook High students cook at Ronald McDonald House

Students in Northbrook High’s Childress Foundation Academy program helped prepare a winter feast recently for a group at the Ronald McDonald House in the Texas Medical Center. The winter meal included chili, spicy potato and chicken noodle soups, seafood gumbo, cornbread and four different kinds of cobbler. The students plan to return and cook once again.

Anthology will publish Memorial High student poems

Library Information Specialist writes award-winning blog

Longtime SBISD employee Vaughn Branom picked up her recent award for the Best Library Blog from the comfort of her own home. Vaughn’s year-old professional blog was named the best overall by educational host Edublog during a “virtual” ceremony held in Second Life, the increasingly popular, Internet-based virtual world. Her online avatar, or electronic image, attended the out-of-this-world awards event.

Region 27 All-Region Choir seats 25 middle school students

Film and art students win Culture Shapers Awards

Twelve high school students will be honored on Thursday, Jan. 31, with awards and possible cash prizes ranging up to $5,000 during the 8th annual Culture Shapers Visual Arts Awards Ceremony. The Spring Branch award winners include film, photography, drawing and painting students. Their instructors are Patty Nilsson and Michael Radler of The Guthrie Center for film and photography, and art teachers Cathleen May of Memorial and Jana Stiffel of Stratford high schools.

Summer School dates are announced

Three separate summer school sessions for SBISD high school students will be held, beginning June 9, at Spring Woods High School, 2045 Gessner. Two sessions will be offered to district middle school students. Through the three-semester option, students can earn up to 1 ½ high school credits.

Nine students earn top awards at Rodeo Art Exhibit

Nine SBISD students have been named top Rodeo Art Exhibit winners after judging was held at the Altharetta Yeargin Art Museum recently. These students may apply for scholarships and have their works auctioned at the upcoming Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo, which rides into town at the end of February.

Popular radio personality featured at Math/Science Literacy Summit

Dr. John Lienhard, a well-known University of Houston professor, best-selling author and regular commentator on Houston Public Radio (HPR) 88.7 FM will be the keynote speaker during SBISD’s first-ever Math/Science Literacy Summit. Dr. Lienhard is the author of the highly acclaimed book, Engines of our Ingenuity, which brings difficult science, math and engineering concepts to general audiences in an easy to understand and thoughtful format. About 100 middle and high school teachers are expected to attend the weekend session.

The Guthrie Center plans Community Tuesday Open House

The Guthrie Center will conduct its next Community Tuesday Open House at its campus Tuesday, Feb. 19, from 5 to 7:30 p.m. The Career and Technology campus, located at 10660 Hammerly, offers the public an opportunity to take a look behind the scenes of technology-intensive real-world programs and education. The Guthrie Center serves SBISD secondary students. During the Open House, students will provide advice on topics ranging from digital photography to installing new computer software. The public is invited.

SBISD earns rebate for energy savings

CenterPoint Energy has awarded SBISD more than $26,800 under its 2007 Schools Conserving Resources (SCORE) Program, an energy efficiency pilot program designed to reduce schools’ energy operating costs. Total savings of $26,818 are the equivalent of a total greenhouse gas reduction of 159 metric tons of carbon dioxide, or about 371 barrels of oil. A rebate presentation was held Jan. 21 during the SBISD Board of Trustees monthly meeting.

Memorial High students win Scholastic Writing Awards

Five Memorial High seniors and one sophomore have been named regional winners in the annual Scholastic Writing competition sponsored by the Harris County Department of Education (HCDE). These students and their English/Language Arts teachers will be honored with a special awards night presentation and reception in early February. Top student works will compete in Scholastic’s national writing contest. Teachers who instruct these students are Laura Kohlmaier, Todd McCardle, Patti Nommensen and Marjorie Schnell.

Student receives Outstanding Senior in French Award

Westchester Academy for International Studies senior Evani Garcia, who is a student of French and Japanese, has received the 2007-08 Outstanding Senior in French Award from the American Association of Teachers of French (AATF). This award is made to a graduating senior who demonstrates both excellence in French studies and commitment to the French language and culture. Evani will attend Rice University next year.

Northbrook Middle Band Benefit features jazz and rock artists

Rolling Stones trombonist Mike Davis and jazz composer Bill Reichenbach Jr. will bring their band, Bonetown, to Memorial High School, 935 Echo Lane, for one performance at 7 p.m. on Sunday, Feb. 10. Tickets for this Northbrook Middle School Band benefit are $10. Proceeds will buy band supplies and partly fund the middle school band’s spring festival and trip. Guest artists may include members of the Houston Symphony and Houston Ballet orchestras.

Westchester Academy teacher will tour Costa Rica

A Westchester Academy for International Studies foreign language teacher is one of two Texas teachers selected by the Toyota International Teacher Program to attend a two-week study trip to Costa Rica soon. Diane Nizza, who teaches French, Italian and Spanish at the district's charter middle and high school campus, will tour biologically diverse Costa Rica in late February.

Pre-AP Parent Night planned Jan. 24
