Terrace Elementary students in kindergarten through 5th grade have the opportunity to participate in the Accelerated Reader program.

The purpose of the program is to encourage and monitor student reading outside of the established language arts routines through the use of appropriately leveled reading materials and comprehension assessments. Accelerated Reader is not intended for grading purposes.

The goals of the Accelerated Reader program is to increase the amount of independent reading, improve the comprehension level through test-taking strategies, and to encourage student discovery of quality literature and authors.

Each student should have a reading range to assist them in choosing books that are appropriate.  Students should be encouraged to choose books within this range.  Reading ranges should be a level where the child can read independently with a 90% accuracy rate on quizes.  Ranges can be determined through the use of running records on "leveled" text, teacher observation, AR quizes, and other assessments if necessary.  Students should have a reading range of 1/2 of a grade level in span. (Example: average 3rd grade student would have a range of 2.7-3.2) Modifications are made in either direction based upon the degree of success on comprehension tests.

Students earn points on the tests that they take.  In an effort to increase participation by students and teachers there are new incentives planned for the 2009 - 2010 school year. Mrs. Reynolds will invite students and teachers to celebrate throughout the school year so watch for special announcements to come!
