 One Summer...Many Books

We are very excited about the 2008 Summer Reading Program at Hunters Creek Elementary! Our goal is for students to read throughout the summer, whether it be revisiting old favorites or discovering new stories. Besides being able to journey to another place when reading your book, you also will keep your reading skills sharp for next year! The recommended daily reading goals are a great way to help guide you. If you need help coming up with some good books to read, visit Suggested Reading Lists on the HCE Library website or the Harris County Public Library website. Please be sure to keep track of the books’ titles and the number of pages for each book. Prizes will be awarded based on the number of books read and/or the number of pages read. So find a bit of shade, or a nice air conditioned corner, and let yourself slip way into the wonderful world of books!

Summer Reading FAQs

How often should I read?
K-1: 15 minutes or more per day
2-3: 20 minutes or more per day
4-5: 30 minutes or more per day

Can I reread a book and have it still count for my summer reading? Most definitely! Reading a favorite book for a second, third, or fourth time is one of life’s great pleasures!

What happens if I lose this sheet? You can pick up another form in the office or just keep track of the books that you read and the number of pages over the summer on a separate sheet of paper.

When do I need to turn in my form? Your form must be turned in by Friday, August 28, 2009 to be eligible for the Summer Reading prizes.
This deadline is a firm one.

If someone reads a book to me, does that count? Yes! Sharing a story aloud is one of the best things around! Younger readers will especially need their parents’ help.

What about listening to a book on tape, CD or my iPod? Those count, too!

What about the Harris County Public Library (HCPL) Summer Reading Program? As usual, the HCPL is having its own Summer Reading program which you can register for on-line beginning on June
6th. Books read for the HCPL program can also count for the 2008 HCE Summer Reading Program.

Are there any prizes for summer reading? Yes! All participants will be included in a drawing for a Barnes & Noble gift certificate- one gift card per grade level will be awarded!

All participants: Summer Reading certificate and a homework pass!

25 books or 1,500 pages: All of the above PLUS a lunch pass! And you’ll be included in a drawing to have lunch with our Principal, Ms. Roach!
